Saw this red tailed hawk on the Belhaven campus yesterday. I apologize for the poor picture quality, I didn't have a better camera handy in the car. A friend tells me he watches a number of these hawks from his back porch on Rosehill Circle in Belhaven as they live in the woods down by the Pearl River. Nice to see this kind of predator wildlife here in the city.

I think since my earliest affiliation with Belhaven, this was the first year for it to actually snow during the Singing Christmas Tree which I believe has generally been the first weekend of December. Anyone remember otherwise?

We had a great time Saturday night and I got into bed around 5am Sunday morning. I didn't take but one photo the whole night, so hopefully others did. We'll have to do it again sometime, maybe next year.

Dr. Parrott has these "Rules for Writers" from William Safire on his Belhaven blog. Good stuff.
1.If any word is improper at the end of sentence, a linking verb is.
2.Verbs have to agree with their subjects.
3.And don’t start a sentence with a conjunction.
4.Proof read carefully to see if you words out.
5.Remember to never split an infinitive.
6.Do not put statements in the negative form.
7.If you reread your work, you can find on rereading a great deal of repetition can be avoided by rereading and editing.
8.The passive voice should never be used.
9.Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long sentences, as of 10 or more words, to their antecedents.
10.Writing carefully, dangling participles must be avoided.
11.Take the bull by the hand and avoid mixing metaphors.
12.Last but not least, avoid cliches like the plague.

Next year Belhaven College moves its athletics competition to the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) in a major expansion of the conference.
Here is a piece about it from Jackson's Fox-40 and here are the details from SSAC.
Update: This is from Dr. Parrott's blog on the matter. Also he notes, "The SSAC will serve all our sports except football – we will remain in the Mid-South Conference for football only."

(0) remarksJust a reminder that Belhaven Homecoming is Nov 5 - 7 this year. Saturday, November 7th will include a party at my house for young alumni. There are rumors that Tom will be there. It is the ten-year for the class of 1999, but anyone from the mid-90s on should feel welcome. Aaron Gentry and Collin Brack are coordinating the Class o' 99 portion (facebook here).

The 76th Annual Belhaven College Singing Christmas Tree is this Friday and Saturday 7:30pm - 9pm in the Belhaven Bowl. This tradition is highlighted in the December 2008 edition of Southern Living magazine: “If heaven had a school choir, this would be it...families gather to witness what most call the start of the holiday season in Jackson, Mississippi.” Roberta Sachs, junior voice major, will be at the tree’s pinnacle as the chosen soloist. Mrs. Carolyn Sachs, adjunct music faculty member, will direct the choir.
